Florida Manatees: Gentle Giants of the Intracoastal

Florida manatees, often called “sea cows,” are one of the most beloved marine animals in the state. These gentle giants can grow up to 13 feet long and weigh over 1,000 pounds, yet they are known for their slow, peaceful nature. Manatees are herbivores, spending up to eight hours a day grazing on seagrass and other aquatic vegetation. Their unique appearance, with large bodies and paddle-like tails, has earned them a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors.

Manatees are commonly found in Florida's warm coastal waters, rivers, and springs, especially during the winter months when they seek refuge from colder temperatures. One of their favorite habitats is the Intracoastal Waterways, where they can often be seen feeding or playing among the mangroves and marshes. However, despite their size, they can be quite elusive!

If you're lucky, you may catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures on one of our **Florida Boat Vacations** cruises. While our cruises are known for breathtaking dolphin sightings, sea birds, and stunning waterfront views, manatee sightings are an occasional and exciting surprise. Passengers often spot them grazing in shallow waters or playfully rolling through the marshy mangroves. These magical moments provide a close-up view of Florida’s rich marine life and leave passengers with unforgettable memories.

Florida manatees are a protected species, and conservation efforts are crucial to their survival. If you ever spot a manatee while on our boat tours, remember to appreciate from a distance and allow these gentle giants to enjoy their natural habitat in peace.

Statistically, Florida has up to 264 days of sunshine every year... meaning about the same number of sunset as well. And here in Daytona Beach, when we say "sunset", we mean "amazing sunset". And there is something incrementally magic about watching said sunsets from the water... with the expansive Intracoastal waterway sprawling away on all sides of our boat. It's a surreal experience. The quiet lapping of the water on the hull of the boat is mesmerizing.

The Champagne and snacks keep us satiated while we watch the sun drift northwards towards the horizon, seemingly getting larger and larger thanks to the phenomenon called "Horizon Illusion". And on occasion, a pod of dolphins will splash around us, snorting out water as they round the surface to get a fresh gulp of air. It's an experience you won't forget and could just make sunset anywhere else pale by comparison. It's 90 minutes of sheer wonder as our group of no more than 8 passengers ply our way up-river from our pickup point to our sunset viewing spot, checking out the expansive and sometimes eclectic homes on the water along the way.
